Below are the most dangerous roads in McAllen based on TxDOT Crash Records Information System (CRIS) data from 2005 to 2021.

Interstate 2/US 83

US 83 is the longest-numbered highway in the state, sprawling 906 miles from the US-Mexico border at Brownsville to the Texas-Oklahoma state line in Perryton. I-2 is the section running concurrently with US 83 through the Lower Rio Grande Valley. In 2022 alone, there were 2,737 accidents on I-2 in Hidalgo County.

I-2/US 83 runs through the southern part of McAllen close to the McAllen Miller International Airport. US 83 intersects many of the busiest and most dangerous roads in McAllen. Between 2005 and 2021, there were 20 fatal accidents along the 4.5-mile stretch of highway.

Dangerous highway on-ramp/off-ramp – Exit 141, Spur 115 (23rd Street). Spur 115 is a common site of accidents in McAllen. There were two deadly accidents here between 2019 and 2021.

US 83 Business (Bus. US 83-S)

Bus. US 83-S, or just US 83 Business, is a business loop of US 83. It’s the longest business loop in Texas, stretching 47 miles through the Lower Rio Grande Valley cities of McAllen, Alamo, Mission, San Juan, and others. It enters McAllen at the border with Pharr, where it crosses I-2/US 83.

US 83 Bus. is one of the major east-west routes through McAllen and travels right through the city center. In the downtown area, US 83 Bus and State Highway 336 share a busy intersection the city is planning to improve with a northbound right turn lane. It’s also one of the most dangerous roads in McAllen.

Between 2005 and 2021, there were 14 fatal crashes along US 83 Bus.

Dangerous intersection – US 83 Bus & Bicentennial Blvd. This unassuming but busy intersection is a bit confusing. Both US 83 Bus and Bicentennial Boulevard become divided roads at the intersection.

FM 2220/Ware Road

Farm to Market Road 2220 (FM 2220), or Ware Road, is one of the main north-south roads in McAllen. It runs 13.8 miles with major intersections at State Highway 336 and US 83 Business.

Between 2005 and 2021, there were 21 fatal collisions along FM 2220, more than any other stretch of road or highway in the city. There is usually a fatal crash here every year.

FM 2220/Ware Road is notorious for traffic congestion and a high number of crashes. The two-lane road simply isn’t able to meet traffic demands.

TxDOT and the city of McAllen are beginning plans to reconstruct and widen FM 2220. The project will transform the two-lane roadway with six lanes while expanding the 80-foot-wide right of way to 150 feet. It will also add left-turn lanes at Mile 6 Road, Mile 17 ½ Road, and Mile 8 ½ Road for improved intersection safety.

Spur 115 (South 23rd Street)

Spur 115 runs almost 7 miles north-south from US 83 Business in McAllen to US 281 in Hidalgo. It replaced a section of FM 1926. A spur to US 83/I-2, Spur 115 also leads to the McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge to the south.

The City of McAllen is planning an improvement project for the stretch of Spur 115 from US 83 to FM 1016 (Military Highway) to widen it to a six-lane divided road.

Dangerous intersection – Spur 115 & Dicker Road. Along with the US 83 intersection, another hotspot for accidents is the Dicker Road intersection with Spur 115.

Texas State Highway 336

SH 336 is a 14.5-mile state highway running north-south from Spur 241 in Hidalgo to SH 107 in Edinburg. It has intersections with 1-2/US 83 and US 83 Bus in McAlle, along with FM 1016 and SH 495 (Pecan Blvd).

There were 17 fatal accidents along SH 336 between 2015 and 2021.

Dangerous intersections – Hackberry Avenue, Lindberg Avenue, and US-83.

FM 3362 (Jackson Road)

FM 3362, or Jackson Road, is a 7.4-mile stretch of road running north-south along the McAllen-Pharr city line. Most accidents along the road are in the commercial areas in the north and south. There were eight fatal crashes along Jackson Road between 2005 and 2021.

FM 2061 (South McColl Road)

FM 2061, or South McColl Road, runs almost 17 miles through Hidalgo County from US 281 Spur in Pharr to FM 1925 in Edinburg. It runs through mostly suburban areas in Pharr before intersecting with I-2/US 83. It crosses with US 83 Bus twice: first in Pharr, then again in McAllen. The other intersection in McAllen is SH 495 (Pecan Boulevard).

There were eight fatal crashes along FM 2016 between 2005 and 2021.
